Is there a way for a user to have new posts be in a plain text mode until they want to use the wysiwyg one? Or even, let them markup by hand?
also, is there a way to get these post entry widgets working with the It's All Text firefox extension and/or vimperator so that I can use that in lieu of the current thing?

Options enabled for selecting between TinyMCE (the current one), HTML Quicktags, BBCode/Quicktags, and plain text.
Instructions:
To select your default, go into your Profile -> "Personal Options" -> Beside "Select Preferred Editor" click the red 'X' to change to green tick mark -> Update Profile. Setting will update for next time a thread is clicked, or refresh currently active windows.
It's not possible to switch it on the fly for obvious reasons, but if you are in TinyMCE there is a "HTML" button near the right hand side to edit the source.
The forum isn't widget based (unless you're using a different/broader definition of widget than I'm used to) and I haven't used either of those before, so, not sure. But, I'll look into it when I get a chance =)

I'm not a front-end dev so bear that in mind and assume I'm saying 'thingee' and going, 'you know, …for kids.'

*snerks* Understood (that description was great). But, yes, I'll look into seeing if we can extend your COBOL/Matrix/Zork maze out further ;)
