More birds! Parrots too!

Crows and parrots – brainy birds, but in different ways

Ps. A Ps on his Ps. "PS Uek has a distinguished pedigree. He’s the son of Betty, a famous New Caledonian crow who has distinguished herself in several past experiments, including one that showed how these birds can combine tools.". Betty is one of the crows I have a tattoo of.

You did probably also read the story of the crows using tool-using vultures as tools:

I did not see it until it showed up in the sidebar of the article. Thanks for pointing it out.

They don’t seem to have come up with a strategy to counter the aggressive ravens. They have large brains for their size and they breed in pairs that could easily see off thieves.

I wonder if it is not a strategy they would use because they aren't as social as other animals even though they pair off.

Maybe, but this is totally speculative, vultures' brains are wired differently, rather for image processing/pattern matching, e.g.

Now when I see ravens, I remember that one went out of his way to put his head through some chain link to bite my thigh.  Aggressive lil bastards!

better watch out, if they developed a dislike of you for some reason, they might attack over and over. The grad students who capture and tag crows in Seattle wear masks so that the crows recognize the mask and not the person.
