Coming Soon to a War Near You: Robo-Hummingbird Drones?

links to a video demonstration

Dubbed “Nano Hummingbird,” this camera-toting, remote-controlled surveillance tool is the latest gadget to fly out the doors of DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Project Agency).

It might become really interesting if such things get autonomous and/or relatively cheap.

There are already some guys tinkering together home-made drones [1] — and few weeks ago I saw this one as "video game" in a consumer electronics store [2].

The mdr blimp is some kind of drone, too. They even used it within a church! [3] A smaller one (about a meter?) might maybe work as low-cost alternative to the hummingbird (but not on windy days). And those air-penguins are flying autonomously [4].

those all sound pretty frikken cool. I am going to wait until I get home to watch since I have been too distracted lately and need to get more work done.

yesterday I didn't manage to get into a quasi flow until later in the day. have spent some time following peoples comments on Libya, wondering why there isn't a no fly zone, etc.

How elegant that it really looks like a hummingbird?

You know this will lead to dozens of real hummingbirds being blown to kingdom come by paranoids with shotguns full of birdshot.

Paranoid people wallpapering with copper mats against "earth rays" and electric smog, plus fly strips in every room — and one of their victims may own a curious cat …

Logical sequela all!  I see really really big fly strips to catch those suckers.

Lybian civil war is much more important. Politic goal is to avoid refugees flooding the EU (especially Italy). This dirty job had been done by Gaddafi.

I hope it will be worth the price the Lybian people are paying — and end well.

A couple of years ago I met a man in a train, travelling with a cat (in a box), and a birdcage with a cockatiel. He told me, that the bird once had been glued at a fly strip and circling anround. Very funny (not for the bird, of course).

A German science fiction author (Andreas Eschbach) wrote a short story about a spy-fly (modified animal) a couple of years ago. Summary: First time CIA managed to place camera and microphone on the Chinese prime minister's desktop. The last transmitted picture showed the "Peking Review" …
