I did a two day "Space Essentials" course last week at which the presenters said that the main reason for putting humans in space during the 1960s and 1970s was that the automation wasn't good enough. Now that we have better remote manipulation and controls, there's not much reason for humans in space at all. (The ISS was largely, and is now totally, resupplied by automated Russian / European supply ships. Only the Americans insist on putting crews on the Shuttle.) Those big ground control stations look expensive, but compared to a space crew … there's a reason "astronomical" is not used in a good way when referring to costs.

 

Of course, once you start getting a long way away from your ground stations, onboard smarts start becoming more important. And how to stop your onboard smarts going all HAL on you even more so…
